I am a pest controller specializing in BED BUGS, begging the general public to become more aware of this pest and the way it can cause substantial economic damage to any place humans live. AMA!

I work at a small breakfast place that's located in on the same lot as a hotel with the same owner. The hotel has had a horrible bed bug problem the whole year I've been here (and since way before that, but I'm not sure how long.

They've done virtually nothing to take care of the problem. They have a pest control company spray once every six months, and only then because they have to because of the biannual inspection by the franchise.

They still book out the rooms, and guests are constantly coming to check out covered in bites and understandably pissed, demanding their money back. To the owner, it's not worth the money he'd lose by shutting it all down long enough to correct the problem. They've even had a few small lawsuits against them for damages because of the bites and infestation.

They don't block off rooms or do any kind of biohazard procedures for the linens or anything else in the infested rooms. They throw everything in together, out in the open and it's thrown in with all of the other laundry, washed like normal, and used immediately. Because we're owned by the same guy, all of our laundry for the restaurant is done in the hotel laundry room. To my knowledge we haven't had any in the diner or took any home, but I still worry about it.

I guess my questions are: 1. What's our risk of bringing them home from being surrounded constantly? Is there anything I can do to prevent it? We haven't really had any issues that I know of, but is it just a matter of time?

  1. What can I do to convince the owner/manager they need to take this more seriously? I'm not extremely knowledgeable when it comes to these pests, I just know I don't want them around me.

TL;DR: owner of hotel I work for doesn't care he has millions of bed bugs in the rooms, I dont know what steps to take to avoid them
