AMA about travel safety & security!

They are certainly both interesting destinations!

Both regions are going through a really fascinating transition at the moment with the KRG independence referendum coming up, which will have political implications in both Turkish and Iraqi Kurdistan. While Iraqi Kurdistan is by far the safest part of Iraq at present, and is known for being incredibly hospitable, the referendum could bring the risk of renewed conflict with Baghdad, so worth keeping an eye on.

Turkish Kurdistan is a slightly different situation, as the conflict with Ankara continues to bubble along there at a low intensity. There are bouts of increased fighting, generally tied to big military operations, however given last year's purge against the Turkish armed forces, I don't anticipate them being able to launch another big push this year. I would just be cautious in this area as you may face unexpected questioning from both the Turkish authorities and those in your own country on your return, as it may be seen as a suspicious destination given its adjacency to Syria.

I'd be really keen to see your travel photos after a trip like that though! I have an old Army friend in Erbil at the moment and it looks stunning going by his FB photos!
