AMA Request: Software Development Manager

Eh, I fit this description. I'm a senior web and ios dev and I am the current acting iOS Engineering Manager at a company. I'm doing it on a contract basis for 9 months while they re-org a bit.

What are some of the questions you ask a potential employee to gauge whether or not they are fit for the job?

Depends on what level they're applying for. Junior dev I'm trying to figure out if they're smart and hard working and pleasant to hang out with. Senior dev and I'm grilling them on exactly what they know and don't know, algorithms, data structures, etc.

Do college degrees REALLY matter?

Resumes tell a story. A college degree says something, a CS degree says something, dropping-out says something, no degree says something. None of those are disqualifying but they're a piece in a bigger puzzle of who the candidate is. My favorite things to see on a resume are either a tough degree from a top college or someone who has built one or many complicated, large apps in their free time (eg: spent a year building their own start-up).

Do you hire from a neutral standpoint or through bias?

Huh?

Are you more likely to hire a male or female applicant?

I've never met anyone that cares as long as you can get the job done.

What do you look for in a so-called experienced candidate?

I want someone I can hand a project and 2 junior developers to and have them come back to me with a well thought out, well architected, high quality software solution, and a happy team.

What do you look for in a GitHub repository?

I will ask for code samples but I don't care about your github profile per se. I'm looking for how you think through problems.

What does a shitty candidate look/sound like?

There are a lot of ways a person can be shitty.

What does a favorable candidate look/sound like?

It depends on the position they're applying for. Generally, smart, hard working, enthusiastic about the work/job/career/company, fun to hang out with.
