For instance, one basic assumption is that our sensory data are somewhat reliable guides the external world, that our sensory experience isn't radically falsifying the nature of our surroundings (as it would be if you were, say, brains in vats, and all your experiences were the result of . This has to be an assumption at some level, it cannot be justified scientifically, because any scientific justification would have to begin by assuming exactly what it is setting out to prove.
