America The Great, Me, Acrylic, 2020

No that's not the general discussion. They never said "disband the police." (Notice the period, that's important) that period is what YOU put there. It's where YOU stopped listening. They have never said "disband the police. Full stop. Never have cops again in any way shape or form"... they said disband the police as the institution it currently is, and replace it with proven system used throughout the world called community led policing. Cops still exist in community led policing, they still patrol, issue citations and on and on. Their training will be different, money given to them will no longer be as much and will go into training specialized social workers to handle situations that police aren't trained for anyway. Money goes to school and jobs and infrastructure to help PREVENT crime.

Community boards representing districts will have oversight of the police. Voting on what the community needs vs what "the law" says (by "the law" I mean the arbitrary standards of enforcement and the laws made up and enacted by the police instead of the community) the people have a voice in how they want their community. Civilian and independent investigation of police, as well as taking away immunity for cops who break the law.

If you had kept listening you would have also heard that every cop in Minneapolis is welcome to apply to be a cop again in the new system. Not guaranteed to be accepted but they are welcome to apply.

The problem is that people heard "we want to disband the police and--" then before hearing more people began shouting "Whuuuuu! Naww. mAh Rights are to Have a CoP" and just began yelling.

Community led policing is a proven system of law enforcement where police exist and are held accountable by the communities they serve, not by the precinct and union they are a member of
