America’s internet wasn’t prepared for online school: Distance learning shows how badly rural America needs broadband.

This is one of the most infuriating things and it is amazing it is allowed.

My other complaint is bullshit pricing. Where unadvertised fees and required equipment rentals add to the cost, and introductory discounts, instead of being modest incentives, are in fact abusive price increases in the next year. Also the bullshit where it is cheaper for me to buy services I don’t use, and rent equipment that stays in a box, for their “bundle” than it is to buy what I want. At least for year 1. And then have to renegotiate for year two. But I’d have to do that anyway.

I think of internet like electricity or water, and I never have this bullshit with those companies. Rates are advertised and increases are usually modest. You pay what is advertised. Billing is accurate. Occasionally there are limits (droughts limiting lawn watering) but these are temporary, fairly enforced, and motivated by clear, understandable reasons and not corporate finance.

Clearly internet providers are not utilities.
