American College of Pediatrics reaches decision: Transgenderism of children is child abuse

I'm a Brit but I follow this sub pretty closely but I rarely comment. I'll make an exception.

I have OCD and it runs in my family. It's pretty severe but it's manageable. (Not the "I like neat and tidy things" bollocks) For many people it seems like transgenderism manifests itself in people who already may be afflicted with a mental illness - schizophrenia, body dissociation disorder, borderline personality disorder, etc.

I'm 22 now, but when I was 16 my OCD manifested itself around the concepts of gender particularly when I was introduced to the idea of transgender people and transitioning in general, and found myself utterly obsessed with the idea of being female. I'm not a super masculine man; I like scented candles, sappy folk music and dance - but because I had the association of those things as intrinsically feminine, I convinced myself that I had to transition in order to 'justify' having these hobbies and interests. I also went to a boys only school and whilst I don't have much of an opinion on whether same sex schools are better than mixed or not, being a feminine guy being forced to play Rugby and do 'manly' things alienated me to the point that I ended up dropping most of my classes and barely graduating sixth form (highschool?)

I 'came out' to my parents at 19, a few weeks before I was due to start hormonal replacement therapy. (A side note, the NHS system here has help for transgender people, but it's like a factory, they never make you critically think about transitioning, never go in depth into seeing if there were any underlying issues and once you are over 18 you don't need parental permission. There are literally hundreds of kids going into one of a few gender clinics here in the UK funded by the NHS and getting life changing and mostly irreversible therapy).

My parents were obviously shocked and I was referred to a private gender specialist psychiatrist. (This wasn't something that was offered to me on the NHS, you have to trawl the internet to find these people). Outstanding guy, full to the brim with qualifications, TV appearances, etc. We worked together to figure out what had caused me to suffer from gender dysphoria and how to make myself more comfortable with my body and identity. This coupled with the fact that mainstream popular culture and academia actively shuns male role models and you end up with a bunch of men who are taught to hate the fact that they are men.

Transitioning might be the current 'best' way of dealing with transgender patients, but the fact that mainstream psychology utterly shuns any alternate treatment to transgenderism rather than conducting very severe (and brutal) physical changes in the form of HRT or sexual reassignment surgery means that I think they are doing us who suffer from this issues a HUGE disservice. Trans folk in the mainstream are coddled and once they actually often find that they are still not comfortable with their outward appearance/getting 'misgendered' and unfortunately many become shut ins. They're job prospects often go down the drain, they often lose friends and family, become alienated from society and ultimately find themselves just as unhappy - if not more than they were prior to transitioning. I know this from first hand experience.

I'm now studying a bachelors in psychology and plan to become a clinical psychologist or go into medical and maybe go into psychiatry if I am good enough and work hard enough. I have next to no friends, became a shut in from 16 - 22, attempted suicide twice and have been on anti depressants for over a year. I've only just recently gotten off of the pills and am slowly becoming more comfortable in my own skin.

TL;DR Modern psychology and popular culture is trivialising what is a very, very difficult mental health problem. 99% of trans folk who transition are not going to have the life of Laverne Cox and the current methods at 'fixing' transgenderism is brutal and oldfashioned. It might work for some, but it really isn't full proof at all. We used to LOBOTOMISE people who were mentally ill less than 100 years ago and I feel that the current system given to transgender people is primitive, but political correctness completely shuts down any alternate debate to help people like myself.
