Damage from UV-A doesn’t cause reddening or tan and sunscreen doesn’t block it very effectively. This means sunscreen isn’t a complete remedy and just because you’re not red or tan doesn’t mean you haven’t received damage.

Studies show that people who sunbathe in the morning and forenoon receive less damage over the same time and the same exposure as people who sunbathe at noon and afternoon.

Also SPF should be understood as protection time not strength. If your skin burns in 1 minute SPF 30 would offer you 30 minutes of protection before your skin burns in the same conditions. 10 minutes + SPF30 = 300 minutes. Using sunscreen with extremely „strong“ SPF doesn’t mean more protection but more time. In fact SPF 50 is to a large extent SPF 30 that is oilier to make it seem like it sticks more. The added ingredients are not healthy for our skin.

A myth is that a dark tan protects you skin. It doesn’t. A normal tan adds 1-2 SPF and a really dark one 2-4.
