Americans have been indoctrinated into thinking it’s normal to not have any semblance of a life.

I had an old roommate who was like this. He would constantly express concern for me, in almost a paternalistic way, about motivation and such. He was dating a girl he would constantly worry about not really liking; he was in a post-grad cert program he had no passion for; he was constantly lamenting his decision to move and leave his old job; etc. He was exhausted by his schedule but kept filling it up with crap that sounds good when talking to strangers at a cocktail party.

I think some people just blindly think hard work = success. You, of course, need to work hard to be successful. But I also see an element of raking leaves in the wind redundancy in some people’s perception of hard work I don’t care to partake it.
