An 8 year old shouldn’t have to do this

American schools put cookies and sometimes sell sodas and other unhealthy things as impulse buys for the students. If the parents don't expressly disallow their kid from going into negative balance kids are allowed to rack up debt so "nobody goes hungry" if the parents don't refill the lunch account. The kids can buy cookies and other things even if the parent never put money in the account to begin with. As a result children can buy things and go into debt without their parent even knowing they are purchasing these things. Children who are too poor to purchase a meal get free or cheaper meals through the federal government or simply bring their own lunch. Most likely this child simply paid for a bunch of his classmates fries and cookies.
