An alpha guardian's opinion on the current state of the community.

I never said anything optimistic, nor did I say where I stood on the issue. I actually believe there's substance to some of the issues (latency in particular has been frustrating), but I'm also level-headed enough to realize where that actually sits in the grand scheme of things.

I experience latency problems in maybe 1 out of 25 matches. The other 24 are often frustrating because I'm making poor decisions, or having an off day with my sniping, or my teammates are doing inexplicably stupid things. But none of those things are Bungie's fault. 24/25 is a pretty good success rate (especially for online multiplayer), but that 1/25 stands out more because there's nothing you can do about it and the control is taken away from you. So people do what makes sense, and lash out at Daddy/Mommy/Bungie. But the difference between "hey guys, this is a consistent issue that's noticeably more frustrating than other issues that may be occurring more frequently" and the "HAY BUNGO YOU RAPED MY SOUL AND EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN THE GAME IS COMPLETELY YOUR FAULT".

Before Destiny, I played a lot more CoD, and I remember serious game-breaking glitches and cheats when they were at their absolute worst. Ever play MW1 and have a cheater in your lobby who then completely borks your game installation, requiring you to remove the game, reset your PS3, re-download and re-install the game, all because you happened to get matched with some cheating jackass? If something like that was happening in Destiny, I'd be just as vocal as anyone else.

But fuck, the community is constantly harping on something one way or the other, so what is Bungie supposed to do? Leave matchmaking alone = problem doesn't go away. Try to tweak matchmaking = new problems join the existing ones. Try to be incredibly detailed and thorough, using data to explain what's going on in PvP = people find ways to exploit the system and nitpick edge case stuff. Stay silent and keep the discourse to a minimum = pitchforks and fire. It's a ridiculous pendulum, and DTG has been incredibly toxic about it. Fucking stock market in freefall and industries falling apart, economists predicting another depression, and what are we doing? Picking apart the BWU like a fucking mammoth carcass and using the blood to paint our faces for war. No perspective.

I'm just really fucking sick and tired of seeing 90% of the front page dedicated to shitty, hateful, unproductive, uninteresting complaints, especially when those complaints are coming from people who are spending 5-25x as much time in this game as the average player, and could easily be addressed by taking a fucking break from it for a while. Come back when shit gets fixed. Who cares? DTG used to be great for discussion and tips and strategies and other interesting things that could add value to the game we already love. Now it's just a cesspool that is feeding upon its own bile.
