An anti virus app which shows self promoting ads the same way as it shows viruses detected.

Hackers aren't going to magically get into your computer and steal all your banking information. They need a way in, which usually either means 1) downloading a malicious program 2) piggybacking on a good program (fuck you Softonic) or 3) using browser scripting to download itself.

Basically, as long as you only download trusted programs from official sources, and you use NoScript (which is pretty much the only way I can browse the web on my Pentium 4 since JavaScript eats CPU for breakfast) and a good adblock, you're gonna have to be an actual target to get hit - the rarer, vulnerability-based techniques rely on you sharing a network with someone stupider/more unlucky/higher priority than the average joe who just wants to browse Reddit in peace.
