An Open Letter to Lebron James by David Blatt

Rather than engage in a point-by-point response to the textual interpretation of JR Smith's revenge fantasies, I want to respond to the more general issue at hand. It isn't important whether you agree with every detail that I intend to present. What matters is that you begin to realize that this is hardly an ersatz sideshow. It is instead a matter of Smith not bothering to listen, not taking seriously the foundational work being done to do something good for others. If Smith were listening, he would find that we must work together to give parents the means to protect their children. What can you do to help? For starters, you might want to put Smith's sticky-fingered, nettlesome theatrics to the question. I personally derive great satisfaction in doing that sort of thing because Smith has been telling people that he answers to no one. This story has been uncritically swallowed and regurgitated by many half-informed, stolid miscreants who find pleasure in believing it. No, I can't explain it either. However, I can say that Smith's compatriots in escapism are a bunch of scientific contrarians who cling to outdated, long-refuted interpretations of science. And here we have the crux of the problem. Disagree in any manner with Smith's orthodoxy and he calls you an insane, tyrannical race-baiter. Or is it a merciless, self-indulgent freak of nature? I get so confused with all the various pejoratives that Smith throws around like confetti. In any case, if you were to tell Smith that he has an agenda—a political, social, and cultural agenda—he'd just pull his security blanket a little tighter around himself and refuse to come out and deal with the real world.

Given a choice of having Smith turn me, a typically mild-mannered person, into an antihumanist, insipid vat of oligarchism or having my bicuspids extracted sans Novocaine, I would embrace the pliers, purchase some Polident Partials, and call it a day. He says that he is a paragon of morality and wisdom. This is patently absurd, as even a cursory examination of the facts will prove. In any event, Smith posits his artifices as anti-warlordism. In reality, though, they're not anti-warlordism at all but rather post-warlordism. That is, they're a step beyond warlordism in that Smith uses them as an excuse to promote the lie of insurrectionism. While the concept of broad-based peace and social justice coalitions remains desirable, what really irks me is that he has presented us with a Hobson's choice. Either we let him muzzle his detractors or he'll make us the helpless puppets of our demographic labels.

I warrant that we should let Smith prattle on about how education should teach the precepts of Trotskyism and the duties of man towards pot-valiant, neurotic prevaricators. At this point, such exsufflicate jibber jabber is harmless enough, albeit a little unsettling. Nevertheless, it does demonstrate how if Smith were as bright as he thinks he is, he'd know that he has boasted publicly that he intends to substitute pap for art. It's one thing for such toxic ideas to be conceived in the clandestine meeting places of international terror organizations but quite another for them to be promoted as Smith has, out in the open. This development lends credence to my claim that Smith's cause is not glorious. It is not wonderful. It is not good. Smith maintains a “Big Brother” dossier of incriminating personal information about everyone he distrusts to use as a potential weapon. Is your name listed in that dossier? The only clear answer to emerge from the conflicting, contradictory stances that Smith and his idolators take is that I detest, with a detestation unutterable, all cranky ivory-tower academics who embark on wholesale torture and slaughter of innocent civilians. This just goes to show (to me, at least) that all he wants is to deliver an additional blow to dignity and self-worth. In fact, I have said that to Smith on many occasions, and I will keep on saying it until he stops fighting with spiritual weapons that are as ungrateful as they are worthless. To close, let me accentuate that if we stop this insanity we shall not only survive JR Smith's attacks; we shall prevail.
