An update to my post about a surprise Birthday Puppy for my husband... The Great Reveal!

I was in a similar spot. But i knew nothing about dogs. It was not that easy.

It is very difficult at first, the dog will have anxiety early on and most likely cry everytime you go to work (its painful to hear, did not know dogs made that noise). Its going to think you abandoned it. Some breeds are better than others when it comes to this, but dogs get anxiety. Especially in new situations like leaving a shelter and going to a stranger's home where they are now being left alone.

When you get home it will have plenty of energy, dog parks helped, but i didn't realize how time consuming it was despite knowing that it would be time consuming. Additionally, dogs from shelters may have bad habits that take a while to correct. I recommend looking at the reactive dogs subreddit.

Overall the learning curve was significant, it was worth it, but if i did it again I would have spent more time researching Breeds and finding one that works best for my lifestyle and then sticking with it. Having a young high energy dog breed probably was not the right match when it was just me.

Getting a dog was a 10/10 decision. I recommend reading the SPCAs guide on owning a dog. Wish you all the best with dog ownership!
