The Angel Bay Files [11:10] [Comedy, Mystery] - This is a pilot episode for a television show/web series that I was co-creator of. It has fish.

Sexiness isn't really necessary in most writing, but you're writing a noir tale. That genre inherently is filled with style. Subtle sexuality, intrigue, mystery. When you're trying to write in a genre you should spend a lot of time making the flow, pacing, and words influence that overall tone you're wanting to convey. Same goes for if you're trying to write a high-octane action film. In that situation you could be punchy. Short sentences. Flashy action.

I'll attempt to rewrite an action block for you, just to show you an example of how I would rewrite it.

Here's your block.

The contents inside a pan are being stirred. Ingredients are being cut on a wooden board. Someone is cooking. John exits his room and heads to the kitchen. He's wearing work clothe. In the kitchen is Eve with headphones on cooking. John's presence is unknown to her and he remains quiet. John and Eve move around the kitchen in perfect synchronization as John grabs coffee and milk before heading to work.

Here's mine:

Eggs are softly stirred in a pan. Chives fall in. Steam rises.

REVEAL Eve, preparing breakfast. She brushes her dark hair behind her ear showing headphones. She blissfully cooks as--

John glides into the kitchen. He sees her hips sway to the music but keeps his presence unknown. Why interrupt? He likes what he sees.

John performs his morning routine. Coffee, milk, sugar. He eases himself onto a stool, to sip and enjoy the show. Eve, still dancing, turns around--

                EVE
    Wah!

John finishes a sip, revealing a friendly smile.

                JOHN
    What's for breakfast?

                EVE
        (recovering)
You sure are quiet. Scared the hell outta me.

Not saying mine is great, but you see how there's a rhythm to it? I'm trying to create a mood. Trying to pull the audience in to how the scene feels. Only telling what I need to.
