Anger over Caitlyn Jenner being chosen over Lauren Hill for ESPY courage award

Honestly, if anyone ever doubts or denies some of the bigotry on Reddit, they should be directed right to the comments on this thread. I had my doubts but now I've had a reality check. A large portion of these comments contain cold if not hateful remarks in regards to Jenner. A comment with 306 points:

"He wins a gold medal. Makes millions in endorsements. Shacks up with another multi millionaire he uses as a beard. Waits until he is 65 and spends some of his millions to become a woman and immediately lands a (Un)reality show. How courageous."

To anyone denying that at least some portion of this "anger" and "outrage" (being reported on by Fox News, no less) has to do with transphobia as it's called, I don't really know what to say. This is only one of many comments among which Jenner is referred to as "Bruce" or "he" or even "it" or is criticized for "seeking attention" instead of genuinely making a pretty big life decision that has major effects. Both Jenner and Hill showed high levels of courage. We are ultimately debating who showed more. Maybe Hill should have been chosen for it (yes, I do think so) and we should be angered (eh), but judging by some of these comments, the level of courage doesn't seem to be the arguing point. It's one person's courage over another's in the end and that should be it, but it isn't.

Now I should just make clear that all this is coming from someone who is religious and, admittedly, is leaning towards unsure/skeptical of the whole transgender moral and scientific issue (more specifically on whether it involves mental illness or not). I just think that anyone saying this has nothing to do with Jenner being transgender should wake up and maybe scroll up or down and read. If you disagree with the transgender issue: fine, so do I; we still need to show a certain level of respect, have empathy, and at least recognize that it's a bold choice to make that usually has devastating consequences based on others' reactions. And Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner being awarded this is certainly a stepping stone for the cause, big or small. (Regardless, the whole award is practically a joke considering most people never cared about it until now. Wonder why.)
