Anime Was A Mistake

Ah, sure.

Big names might be stuff like Attacker You! or Captain Tsubasa, which were anime that basically everyone watched. Being about sports very popular in my country, there were extremely relatable for the high school viewers.

Also Cat's Eye was big. My grandparents never missed an episode. Together with Meitantei Conan and the Lupin III franchise they made the backbone of the "crime" anime that mostly adults watched.

Other stuff might be Versailles no Bara, which was basically recommended by every history teacher in the attempt at making us interested in the French Revolution.

On the comedy side, Ochamegami Monogatari: Korokoro Poron definitely was enormous. Doraemon also was massive. Both of these are actually kids-oriented show, but a lot of people from all ages usually watched them.

Do note that none of these anime are realistic. They simply didn't rely heavily on "anime-only" tropes that would be hard to understand from the casual watcher, such as tsundere, rage moments, weird fanservice... They were just as absurd as today anime, but in a more "easy to understand" way.

These were just the biggest one. Cat's Eye and Doraemon are still broadcasted even today, for instance.
