Annihilation (2018)

One major flaw is 'we've been sending in small squads for three years and none of them ever come out... So we're sending you, a small squad in, with only one military trained op in hopes that something changes this time"

"Sure the shimmer is only 100 meters wide and we could just send in remote armored vehicles (they say machines didn't work, but machine guns did so a combustion engine would too) or send in drones or drop paratroopers in directly at the lighthouse, but we feel like sending in another small squad, what hasn't worked for three years, is a good idea. Best of luck. Godspeed."

The ending scenes were very cheesy. The alien mimicking her and whatnot, her 'outsmarting' it, it felt comical to me.

BTW - Who cares about theme and symbolism if the basic story doesn't hold water.

The scene where they're all tied up is just ridiculous. Felt very 'B-Movie' all of a sudden in this kinda deep feeling visceral story. I think the effects and the CG and the look of the thing was really well done, but the writing and the bad acting killed it for me.

I remember seeing 'ARRIVAL' near that same time and being wowed in all directions by the writing and performances. Was expecting that clever level of writing from EX MACHINA and was left feeling like I got ripped off. No one can argue that Natalie Portman sucked in that movie. Looking back at her past performances I'm now starting to notice she's not as good as she's presented to be. Her tendency to overact started in THE PROFESSIONAL, which was good, her roll in that kinda called for it, but looking back at BLACK SWAN I feel like she over played it. Great film, but after ANNIHILATION I just started not liking her as much. Oscar Issac is great in everything I've seen him in.
