Discord has a lot of appealing features.

Communities, programmable bots, chats, channels, screen sharing, fancy AI noise cancelling, and it works pretty damn well.

Some of my University lecturers have been using Discord for our remote learning because it works so much better than Microsoft Teams and Blackboard.

The programmable bots really elevate it, it has a pretty simple Python API so it's not hard to make bots that can do practically anything. One of my professors used it to make a bot for submitting your answers during laboratories, which then automatically updates a class leaderboard. It was a fun competitive aspect for otherwise isolating remote virtual laboratories.
