Another death in the family and my failure to care or express condolences after I found out the Q

Your story is so similar to thousands, possibly millions, of so many families right now. It feels like we're at some sort of hinge-point in US history. Twenty years from now, we might look back at this point in time and see this as the beginning when family rifts started to change American culture on a massive scale. Yes, we disagreed in the recent past, such as during the Vietnam era, but this feels different.

You may want to listen to a Slate podcast called "A Word". In the most recent episode, Adam Serwer is interviewed. He wrote the book, "The Cruelty is the Point". I don't know about your family, but what seems so overwhelming at the moment is that we're discovering that so many of our coworkers, neighbors, and family members actually get off on being assholes and being cruel.
