Trump is racist insofar as he knows he can use racist dog whistles to rile up a certain subsection of the republican base. I don't think he's smart enough to really know why a lot of the stuff he says is racist, he just knows its vague enough and there's enough plausible deniability that he can just yell "FAKE NEWS!" and his supporters will agree. It's also clear his rise has coincided with a rise in white nationalism, and I don't think it's a coincidence. He's another one of these dangerous stepping stones to even more disgusting ideologies. The fact these people don't support Trump should neither surprise anybody or absolve Trump to continuing his fear-mongering campaign against non-white immigrants.
