There is a BIG difference between Bersih and the Hong Kong protests.
I, for one, am proud that Malaysians handled themselves very rationally during Bersih 2.0. We cleaned up on our own, didn’t destroy any public infrastructure. We made a statement as best as we could. Because there was an understanding that Malaysia is still our homeland even though we may hate the government’s guts.
But do you see this in the Hong Kong protests? Do you see what it has degenerated into? Protestors throwing Molotov cocktails at the police, breaking and burning public infrastructure? Where is this love for Hong Kong that they profess, when their actions say the complete opposite?
Just because I don’t support the HK protestors DOES NOT MEAN I support China. In fact, China has MANY deficiencies of its own, especially with regards to human rights. I also feel that the protestors have a very legitimate reason for protesting. Who wouldn’t protest when they can’t even afford a house to live in their own country?? The problem is that the HK protestors are being more destructive than constructive, and the fact that they remain ignorant to the true nature of their actions really turns people like me off. Protest all you want, but if you really love your country, you will not be razing it to the ground.
