Any advice for/things you wish you did as an incoming freshman?

Little warning with my advice: I like to really go easy on freshmen, because the transition from high school to college can be jarring, and I want to give you advice that will help alleviate your stress! It's your first year of university, please do not put too much pressure on yourself. :)

So, personally freshman year I wouldn't worry TOO much about research or internships, they usually go to upperclassmen. You for sure can still try though! Just don't be disappointed in yourself if you get turned down, it's very hard as an underclassmen competing with upperclassmen.

Connect with your professors and TAs/GSIs (they can help you, actually, with research and internships).

Sit in, or at least near, the front of class because you'll focus better and will likely be less shy to ask questions (also the professor will recognize you).

Maybe get an on-campus job second semester (see how first semester goes) or get involved in tutoring if you're into working!

If you make a commitment, such as study groups or clubs, stick to it! My biggest regret thus far is slowly drifting away from my film club and writing group.

Try things at least once even if you think you'll hate them (going to sporting events, eating in public and trying new food, etc.) because you may surprise yourself and meet cool people or find new interests. Basically, force yourself to say "yes" at least once (as long as you're not pressured or uncomfortable). Take chances! :)

Also, what I have always done is sign up for a bunch of classes at first, then try them out the first week, see what I wanna keep and drop the other 1-2 classes for a full refund! But if you do this, make sure you don't miss the deadline to drop in order to get your money back! Along with that, for your first semester freshman year I would recommend taking the minimum amount of units (it's usually 13 units) so you don't overwhelm yourself AND you have a higher chance of getting good grades, thus giving yourself a positive outlook on how the rest of your college academic experience will go. Up to you, though. :)

If you ever have questions, any questions, email or visit with your counselors. That's what they're there for.
