Any books to read about LotR/Hobbit universe in second age?

I would say that the basic framework of the book is represented somewhere in the film. The whole subplot about what Gandalf is up to whenever he leaves the company makes sense to include, I guess, but during those scenes I felt more like I was watching a super hero movie with all of the flashy fighting. It looked like an RPG and felt out of place in Middle Earth. The depiction of Beorn was disappointing to me, because he's such a cool character but he was reduced to an off-brand "Werewolf of London" and barely even appears in the movie. The whole Bolg-Azog thing could have been more faithful to the lore and have maybe been even more entertaining that what we got. And time that could have been devoted to making all of those things I mentioned work better was wasted on the Kili-Tauriel-Legolas shit show. I don't even want to get into that one. I could go on. The whole series felt cheesy, and while The Hobbit is a whimsical and fun book, it never feels as forced as Legolas running up falling stones like a staircase.
