Should leftists in world war 1 side with the entente because wilhelmite germany is marginaly more iliberal than britain and france? The freedom to assemble, form unions and speak freely are important but this should not translate into preferring one regime over the other on the world stage, that should be decided on the basis of how countries are acting ON the world stage. America is clearly doing more active harm to the world in general, and leftist movements in particular, than China. The only people to whom china should be a bigger concern are the people IN China. Besides there is nothing a westerner can do to make china more less authoritarian, there are no examples of liberalization imposed from abroad succeding, not one. This is a geopolitical dispute with the authoritarianism of china simply being a talking point for one side. At best it is a distraction from the negative role america plays in the world and domestic problems at home, at worst it is taking sides in a conflict in which the working class has no stake.
