My partner is second-gen Chinese. His parents moved here before he and his brother were born (almost 30 years ago). They ran a takeaway for a while before his dad’s health declined and are now both retired. My partner and his brother are obviously Chinese to look at, but have Scottish names and live like any other guys from Glasgow, except with more Chinese pals and they’re really into Asian food, so they’re really well integrated (since they grew up here). His parents aren’t really well integrated, all their friends are first-gen Chinese and his mum speaks very little English (I can barely talk to her and she needs a translator if she goes to the doctors/hospital). They go back to Hong Kong and China once a year for about 4-6 weeks to visit family. Sometimes I notice that my partner doesn’t get some cultural/social references because he grew up in a very Chinese household, where they only watched Chinese shows on TV and only spoke Chinese at home.
