Has anyone abandoned a "sensible career" in lieu of pursuing your dream? What happened?

Classical musician here. I have two degrees and haven't a had a job since I was in high school and even then that only lasted for like a year. At the end of the year when my training is over I'll be working behind the scenes of a symphony continuing my training as an orchestral musician (I've been doing concert band for 20+ years, orchestra is brand new to me).

Here's how you find out what you want to do. For the past three years I've been doing what I want to do without a paycheck (it's a symphony process for musicians.) The difficulty of this was/is that I'm still living with my parents and I'm in a new city and don't really know anyone...it's not really a problem, but living a single life at the time can be boring. I haven't had a vacation in 2 years, can't afford it; and I have an allowance of $20 for the week for another two months. $10 of which I use on gas, the other $10 so I can use the practice rooms at our local music college (parking deck money)..

But here's the thing. After 2 more months of this, they'll be paying me to have fun and I'll get to do whatever I want for a living. I'm also donating part of my paycheck to help create more entry level jobs.

Do whatever the fuck you want to do :D I'd rather work with people who give a shit about what they're doing
