Anyone else find it hard relating to the experiences here?

I'm -all- for doing something about internalized racism, but not for targeting Asian women specifically.

Sure, I don't think Asian women should be the only target of internalized racism if that's what you're saying. But "internalized racism" is such a broad topic that it's almost pointless to try to address it without getting specific about it.

Asian women devaluing Asian is one form of internalized racism that we should address. So are Asian dudes who think sleeping with White girls is the pinnacle of "making it." So is badmouthing Asian culture in front of your non-Asian friends. So are certain types of plastic surgeries. And so forth. We can address all these things in their specificities.

I also don't buy that Asian men/women have this special obligation to each other anymore so than to other POC.

This is just a fundamental disagreement between us then. I'm not saying that Asians should be tribal, but much like how women may have a special obligation to help out other women in an unfair playing field, I absolutely believe that Asian Americans have a duty to each other. Classifying all minorities as "POC" is too clumsy and doesn't give each group the specialized attention to its issues necessary.

We could be promoting Asian American men as fully sexual beings with agency in the media.

Yes, I always appreciate it when women, Asian or not, write about how refreshing it is to see someone like John Cho as a romantic leading man or just about their relationship with an Asian guy.

(I personally have met people who told me they don't date Asian women and felt awful for it. I can't imagine what it must be like for someone to face that more than once in their life...)

Thanks for commiserating! Yeah, it sucks, doesn't it?
