1999 is considered a watershed year in cinema. So many breakthrough, experimental, and high concept movies came out that year that also managed to have widespread appeal.

I used to think this too, but newer movies and shows simply can’t compare. They don’t tread new ground either visually or artistically. I’m not seeing movies with a bold vision for filmmaking that become a new standard (like bullet time from the Matrix, for instance.)

The lower cost of SFX has also made them prolific to the point of obsolescence. There’s nothing “special” about them anymore.

There’s also been enormous wasted potential. So many movies, TV shows, etc had the potential to be amazing, but just ended up being mediocre.
