Anyone have experience with buying an adult dog?

I’m not sure on resources to point you to, but it is fairly common to adopt a fully grown dog. You hear here often people recommending older dogs for people who have full time jobs or even just don’t want to deal with the puppy and adolescents periods.

Almost one year ago, I adopted an eight year old Weimaraner. Because of her age I even got a senior discount. But thanks to her breed, she is full of energy and spirit, eager to learn, and a lot of fun. She came with some issues from lack of socialization to certain things, like leash reactivity and she doesn’t appreciate people greeting her, but it has been extremely manageable for me and she fits into my lifestyle extremely well.

I think that is the biggest thing with adopting an adult dog versus a puppy. You don’t get to control that initial socialization period which is so important, but there are a ton of great adult dogs waiting to be adopted who are well adjusted. The nice thing is many come house trained and are settled in more than a puppy. I am sure people here will have much more advice.

When working with a rescue or humane society, explain thoroughly your experience and what you are looking for in your future dog. They want to set the dogs up for success in their new homes.
