Anyone know how many units have been pre-ordered?

Only Oculus know, but my guesstimate...

I think the latest DK2 sales figures we have are from June 2015 - 118,930.

Given the following...

The DK2 had been available to order for approx. 16 months before the above date.

Assuming that Oculus had a similar manufacturing capacity per a month, as their July 2014 stated target of 10,000 units shipped per a month.

There were also a number of units placed in distribution centres around the world, in that same month (I'm guessing another 10,000 units).

What we don't know is how many DK2's were manufactured from pre-orders to first shipping: personally, I don't think any units were manufactured until June 2014. So it took around 6 months, to Nov 2014, to catch-up with the backlog.

I would then estimate that the number of DK2's sold in the first nine months (March to Nov 2014), was around 90,000.

Currently the estimated shipping date of new CV1 orders is June 2016, so approx 3 months from the first shipment. And assuming that Oculus are beginning manufacturing from Feb 2016, five months of manufacturing is required to clear the current backlog of orders.

So if the CV1 manufacturing capacity is the same as the DK2 (very unlikely), that would indicate CV1 sales of around 60,000 so far.

Given that Oculus will have based their assumptions of required stock levels for the CV1 on their experience of the DK2, I think it is reasonable to suggest that they would base their required monthly manufacturing capacity to remove any anticipated backlog.

The five months from DK2 pre-orders opening (March 2014) to first shipping (July 2014), if we average out total sales, saw sales of around 50,000 units. Of course, many more units were likely ordered within the first five months, than later months - but as I said this is a crude guess!

A very crude calculation would suggest that to remove any backlog for the DK2, before shipping began, Oculus would have had to produce at least 30,000 units in both June and July 2014.

Oculus have also stated that a limited number of CV1's will be available via retail in April - perhaps as many as 10,000?

So based on the above assumptions and known details, I would estimate the current number of sales of the CV1 to be around 140,000 units.
