Has anyone taken these consistently failed end of world predictions seriously? To the point of selling their stuff, quitting their job etc?

Some people take this incredibly seriously, even since the biblical times the Thessalonians as you stated believed they had missed it

  • When our Lord Jesus returns, we will be gathered up to meet him. So I ask you, my friends, not to be easily upset or disturbed by people who claim the Lord has already come. They may say they heard this directly from the Holy Spirit, or from someone else, or even that they read it in one of our letters.
  • But don't be fooled!

People that study Apocalypticism all have believed that the end of the world is imminent ( and always in THEIR lifetime) , and there have been a lot who claimed they figured it out… they crunched the numbers .. and some of these people are well intended , one big example was Harold Camping he put up huge billboards “JUDGMENT DAY MAY 21ST 2011” , well it didn’t happen so he said for sure he was off a few months and changed it to Oct 21ST - the poor guy , but he isn’t alone - doomsday cults were a real thing , the phrase got a real meaning from people that are fooled into dropping everything and following these leaders and usually resulting in suicide like “!HEAVENS GATE CULT”,

So unfortunately people think they have figured out Gods timing ⏱, or like the Thessalonians were fooled by apostates who told them basically do whatever you want because he has already come

JUDGMENT DAY THAT NEVER CAME ( story of Harold Camping)
