Has anyone tried playing a grungy, world-weary Sam Vimes type of Paladin instead of he typical Golden Guardian of Good? How did it go?

One of the best characters I ever had was a Dragonborn Oath of Vengeance Paladin worshiping a dragon god.

I remember one time we had captured an enemy and the interrogation was going nowhere, so my paladin killed the guy and brought him back to life with one HP via Lay on Hands. He still wouldn't talk so the process was repeated a few times until he broke and gave up the intel we were after.

Later on in the campaign we suffered a TPK, and were made to answer for our sins in the afterlife. If we could prove that we didn't deserve to be cast into this realms equivalent of hell, then we could be sent back to the land of the living to complete our quest.

Obviously my paladin's death-torture came up. The catch is that we would be judged according to the tenants of our deity. I was able to make a convincing enough case that I was following my oath to the dragon god.

He ended up in hell anyway after taking the place of another party member to give them another shot at life, but he went there on his terms.

I loved playing that character so much. I even made a Spotify playlist chronicling his story from beginning to end.
