Anyone who's on the fence about the upcoming cannabis referendum, let's chat

(not OP, and not downvoting, but going to chime in anyway)

You say:

I am "someone who has cared for patients involved in accidents secondary to drug use", and "I’m concerned [what] might happen if cannabis becomes more accessible"

and

"Without a doubt alcohol is worse"

Fair enough. At this point I must apologise, as I am one of those drug users who has been using tonight... beer, which I brought at my local supermarket. But I digress...

Here is a thought experiment. Please do your best to work with me here.

So, I really love beer. And I just hate wine. I despise the stuff (it just tastes disgusting and gives me a headache.)

So, here's the question: Would you support me if I got into parliament and decided to legalise cannabis, and criminalise wine?

By your own statements, things would be better because these sorts of accidents would reduce.

If you think I'm just being facetious (or drunk), you might be right, but I can tell you this crazy reality exists for many New Zealanders. Over 45000 New Zealanders have been convicted in the last decade for a drug that you agree is less dangerous than alcohol.

What if your friend "Mary" was behind bars right now because she got caught with a bottle of red? Would you still stand by what seems to be the end conclusion of your argument?:

"Yes, Mary should stay in prison because that is already the law and we shouldn't change this law because we don't want more people involved in accidents."
