Is anything safe?

Something my mom told me recently that has really helped me is that safety is a spectrum ranging from least safe to most safe. Just because there is some risk doesn't mean you're being unsafe - there will always be some risk.

I'm not suggesting you let your kid sleep in their car seat overnight, but you are not being unsafe for going grocery shopping with your baby in a car seat.

The first time we had to take the baby to the doctor's after he was born I cried because I was just so scared about him leaving the house and being on the road with whatever potential idiot driver might crash into us. That was statistically possible. But in reality, it was a totally normal function of life and I needed to do it. With appropriate safety cautions, of course, but I couldn't just never leave the house.
