I grew up in a 1 bedroom Manhattan apartment until I was 6. We all shared a room until we moved to a 2 bedroom and I don't remember my parents complaining about it being difficult because my brother and I were sound sleepers from birth.
Two years ago I was living in a 1 bedroom apartment when I found out I was pregnant and I assumed I'd be fine there for at least a year - I'd just share a room until we eventually moved to a bigger place.
NO. My baby was a super light sleeper and any rustling, any sniffling, he'd hear it and wake up. Hours of this every night. We finally moved when he was 10 months old and now he sleeps like a log in his own room.
So my point is: it's really going to depend on what kind of kid you have. A light/difficult sleeper needs their own room after 6 months old, especially if you want to do cry it out. Since you don't know what your baby will be like and you probably don't want to drop extra $ for a 2 bedroom now if you don't have to, consider a "flex" 2 bed - an apartment with a dining room or other area that can be made into a small room using a temporary pressure wall. Even an apartment with a large enough single bedroom can be split. Then when your lease is up you can decide if that works for you or you need more room/privacy and want to size up.
Oh and congrats! Pandemic aside, it's a great city in which to to grow up!
