Appetites: a cook book by Anthony Bourdain recipes

So did I! But I think just because it works from some people doesn't mean it will work for most.

The Food Lab and Cook's Illustrated are fantastic resources for cooking knowledge but they both have the same aim; using the perfect ingredients, techniques and tools to make the best whatever. Going from "my wife cooks all my meals" to Kenji's 30 ingredient meatloaf(which is one of the best things I've ever eaten) is like throwing someone who can't swim into the deep end.

I could very easily see a beginner getting discouraged and giving up because "cooking is hard, only professionals can do it" if they started out with TFL and Cook's. That's why I suggested How to Cook Everything and Cook's Country. They're both just as high quality high quality but their aim isn't to make the best thing ever it's to to help less experienced cooks learn not only the basics of cooking but, indirectly, how to fall in love with cooking by providing great but easy recipes.
