Apple expects record sales of new iPhones: “There’s an iPhone for every person”

This strategy is interesting when contrasted with what Steve Jobs did when he returned to Apple in the late ‘90s. Apple was selling a ton of different skus and he believed it was too many and confusing so he eliminated all of them except for a consumer laptop, consumer desktop, pro laptop, and pro desktop. And the company rebounded hard in a good way which validated this strategy. Now it seems like there are truly 50+ different iPhones selling new when all colors, sizes and models are considered. And this seems to be working too. So have we changed when it comes to what’s important? It just doesn’t seem logical that both strategies worked.
