Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers

I am honestly not very impressed.

  1. All of these devices are those which already had integrated graphics. Apple probably is still figuring out how to replace the high-end AMD GPUs on their other models. We will have to wait and see whether they can design their own high-end GPUs, use some kind of hardware-software interface to make AMD GPUs work with the Apple chips or force AMD to make custom GPUs for them. I would hold my horses when it comes to gaming or any other GPU intensive tasks.

  2. No new design to go along the huge platform shift is disappointing. Also the webcam is still 720p, the RAM still starts at 8GB which cannot be upgraded.

  3. They used vague terms like "best selling mobile PC" and "Latest PC laptop chip" instead of giving the actual models against which they are claiming superior performance. The graphs also did not have any solid numbers on any axes.

  4. No Windows support means that not only gamers will he affected but a lot of software developers too who need to develop applications for the Windows platform or the X86-64 architecture. While MS might not make Windows ARM available, Apple should have gone ahead and developed some kind of emulation even for Bootcamp.
