So I’ve done my end of research and this is what it boils down to for me with my XS.
Verizon- Cost of coverage- Damaged, Lost or Stolen -$13/mo via Asurion so $312 for 24 months. Through Asurion Deductable -$199 deductible. You have 3 claim total per 12 months, this means it doesn’t matter what is done to your device its considred a claim. Replacement - Asurion does not cover screen replacement at this time so they will have to replace your entire device. They will give you what they have in stock. 50/50 shot of you getting a new device or refurbished (I’m never ok with refurbished replacement devices through Asurion, its gone wrong so many times).
AppleCare Cost of coverage - Damaged, Lost or Stolen - $14.99/mo or $299/yr. Through Apple themsleves. Deductable - $29 for screen replacement. $99 for any other accidental damage. $199 for iPhone 8, iPhone 7, and iPhone 6s, $229 for iPhone XR, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 6s Plus, $269 for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone X. Here’s the kicker! You only get 2 incidents (does not matter what they are) over a 24 month period. So if you break your screen twice you cannot file a claim for it being stolen. I personally think this is rubbish! If I am paying for the premium replacment for a stolen device is should at least get ONE lost/stolen replacement. Replacement- Apple will replace your device with a new or refurbished device as well. I personally have never had to do this through Apple but I would trust they would give me a better working device than Asurion.
So what it boils down to is what YOU personally will need. If you have a tendency to break your phone then you will need the Asurion coverage. If you are like me and just want the coverage for kicks because you never need it then the AppleCare is the best bet.
Side note, I do purchase top accessories to prevent damage from happening to my phone. I have a Zagg Glass + screen protector and a Under Armour Protect Verge on my XS Plus. The Zagg has a lifetime warranty, its $5 to replace it if it breaks. The UA has a lifetime warranty as well but I haven’t had to use it. I hope all of this has been helpful!
