AR-15s sold out across Canada fear of ban

You do not need "spousal approval", but what you need spousal knowledge. If you are married, or have had a divorce in the last 2 years, you need to get a signature from your spouse that you have informed them that you are buying a gun. If you do not do this the Royal Canadian Mounted Police will contact them and inform them that you have applied for a gun license. http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/form-formulaire/pdfs/5592-eng.pdf

No matter what you think of this idea it is very different than needing spousal approval. It really is about making if harder for people to murder their spouse or ex by flagging potential safety concerns, not that Canadian have to ask for their spouses permission to get a gun license. Unless your spouse is going to lie and claim you are abusive or mentally unstable and arrested they are not going to be able to stop you from getting a gun.
