Ok. There is a government program that allows civilians to own M1 Garands if they demonstrate training and are part of an organization that promotes constant training (like a sporting club, for instance). I think other countries allow people with military training to own those types of weapons. I think I might be ok with that, under the additional caveat that our government stops actual military weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists and criminal organizations. For example, any weapon given to the cartels or the Taliban by us should also be legal for civilians, because there’s no philosophical consistency with our government arming these groups and saying that law abiding citizens can’t be trusted with them
