I suspect emotions are more like electronics activated by sensory switches set off by things like motion, sounds, smells, imagery and other discernible vibrations and identifiers and that there's neutral, natural programming that doesn't require rationalization and creates the best chance of survival - as in animals - and the human, blinding virus and malware infested programming installed according to beliefs that are currently being programmed according to learned concepts of authority.

I also suspect it's all good, all working perfectly, all freely chosen and understood from the perspective of the "you" that bought the ticket for this particular ride - and nobody dies - or, rather, what "dies" is a disoriented, frightened, emotionally-charged image of a "you" that never actually existed in the first place.
