Are Landlords Fleeing the Private Rental Market?

Ok so a lot of heat in this comment section, so can we get something straight whilst we are all here??

Are people arguing in favour of private rentals even when they are not landlords just to keep their house price high?

Houseowners specifically, tell me honestly, how deep does your house price fear go? Because there's always the negative equity problem I know, and also just paying more for the same amount of thing always sucks. Some have mentioned they need rental income to pay for social care/pension/mortgage, and I can't state enough how unstable this situation would be if this were available to everyone. Is anyone willing to admit they are praying for ungodly house price increases just to 'keep up appearances', on the other hand?
