Are Lectures Really that Bad?

I am a big fan of lectures. Direct instruction is a must, especially for most kids. It’s how you do it though. Your lectures should be chunked together in (at most) 10 min. segments. Otherwise, engagement goes down & they check out.

Read the room & see if you’re losing them, and adjust your speed accordingly. Bonus points if you give your ELD kids & (those that could use the accommodation) a copy to write on, fill in & follow along.

To make the lecture more interactive, you could have kids discuss at tables, take a poll, throw out a discussion question, have them move around and summarize together, etc. Kids shouldn’t be just sitting passively, and you’ll also get a break from talking non-stop.
