Hell, I had CPS called on me for being homeless with my eyes on my kid 24/7! The CPS officer insisted that there must be SOME place I could find to live, and that living in my car with my daughter was inherently neglectful. I responded that if she found me a place, I would move in, no question. She searched and called dozens of places (while I did, too), as we sat there together. At the end of several hours, she admitted that she couldn't find anyplace either (even a homeless shelter that had openings). She asked me a few questions, said I seemed to be doing very well for my daughter (given the circumstances) and wished me luck. Then I picked up my daughter from school and she told me that another CPS agent had come to the school and had interviewed her for a couple of hours there, asking questions such as, did she love her mother and did her mother love her, among other things. I feel lucky that they didn't take her away.

(End of story: we managed to do a combination of car and couch surfing until I was able to get us an apartment. I still live in it; she's since grown up and is happily married now.)
