Are my instructors standards for a promotion normal?

I shouldn’t say “probably a black belt”, just from what I’ve seen, and from what he’s accomplished including defeating other black belts in this tournament, what I should have said is that I believe he’s at a black belt level. That’s on me. That was a pretty minor point, what I was getting at was that one of our best students was a white belt and held his own against a double tournament champ who I believe to be at a black belt level, defending and going for many leg attacks etc before a ref stoppage due to an “auditory submission” - he grunted loudly after his arm popped in an arm bar, good call from the ref. Just pointed out that he only received his blue belt after this match.
