Are people just not aware of what Climate Change will mean personally?

honestly, I lay awake at night and wonder the same thing every day. All of my day to day concerns (saving for retirement, should I go back to school, having a career doing anything but trying to save humanity from ourselves) seem so useless and irrelevant. There's a pretty good chance none of that will matter...

and yeah, I think there's a pretty good chance people don't really know, or don't want to know, what climate change will mean personally. Everyone would be on a plant-based diet, minimizing how much they use any form of transportation, constantly lobbying their government to do something. Instead, most people eat meat, most people drive, most people fly, and things that are destroying the planet are subsidized with your and my tax dollars without most of us doing anything about it.

I don't think it's that they sound like things that will happen somewhere else, it's that brains protect theirselves. Plenty of people don't actually believe it will be as bad as it will be... and plenty of people don't have the time or energy to really care. We all have to exist in the world as it is, and for many people "existing in the world as it is" means all they can focus on is feeding their families and paying their bills.
