Why are people upset that this season isn’t season 1?

Thank you. Absolutely. It seems some folks - and I'm not saying their views are not valid just I can't share them - want a repeat of s1 and that was unique in its own way. The characters that were created for s1 were for s1 and the story fit them. Same with s3. It's just a different story and as you say not focused on solving the case but how that case in time shapes the detectives and those around them even the victims and parents of the victims.

Regarding if they are good or bad detectives, I'm glad they are not trying to be "perfect" detectives that everything gets solved. Roland clearly said that Wayne had lots of cases he didn't' solve and this was going to be another one and the system really blamed the wrong person who didn't even serve time because some racists got themselves and Woodward killed.

So I guess it doesn't show bad detectives but real detectives, flawed as they are in a flawed system from every angle you wanna see it.
