Why are the prequels so hated?

Ok but I always saw the point of the romance is that it doesn't have any chemistry. Anakin is so broken inside and unloved that when one person he thinks he should love shows him any kindness he takes that and runs with it but doesn't understand it. He's largely going through the motions because that's what he thinks he should be doing when really all he cares about is the fact that Padme cares about him.

I must admit I haven't analysed Padme's motivations more but considering how much Leia's emotions got sidelined in the OT I can be forgiven for presuming George Lucas just writes women more as props than characters so there's not much to analyse
